France’s visa reduction and reception of Polisario activists question the kingdom’s diplomacy

The silent crisis between the Kingdom and the French Republic continues, to reach a new stage of pressure attempts on Morocco not declared by Paris, through its recent reception in the parliamentary headquarters of leaders of the separatist “Polisario” Front.

The reception of the members of the front in the French Parliament aroused astonishment in Moroccan circles; Given that it has political connotations and dimensions, and comes after King Mohammed VI’s speech on the occasion of the anniversary of the revolution of the King and the people, in which he stated that the Sahara dossier is the mirror through which Morocco looks at world.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party, through its team in the House of Representatives, entered the line of the tense relations and the systematic abuses of French diplomacy towards the Kingdom. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, asked about the practical measures that will be taken to curb these unacceptable abuses, he said.

The team, through parliamentarian Mohamed Benjelloun Touimi, posed a question to Minister Bourita about the possibility of implementing the rules of diplomatic reciprocity to repair the citizens of the Kingdom from the decisions of the French authorities, especially with regard to the reduction in the number of visas granted to Moroccans in Paris.

The parliamentarian explained that the national political class registered with great astonishment the decision of the French authorities, strategic partner and main investor of the Kingdom, to reduce the number of visas granted to Moroccan citizens who have economic, social or educational relations with the French Republic to less than 50 percent, becoming an official rejection of most visa applications.

In this regard, parliamentarian Mohamed Benjelloun Al-Tuwaimi recorded, in statements to the electronic newspaper Hespress, that this matter was accompanied by the announcement by the French authorities to put an end to the decision to reduce visas for the benefit of a neighboring country; This was after the hostile maneuver to the territorial integrity, when receiving the leader of the separatist front, in reference to the recent decision of the Tunisian president Kais Saied.

The same spokesman stressed that these steps require knowing the practical measures that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take to stop these abuses, as well as studying the possibility of implementing the rules of diplomatic reciprocity to repair the Moroccans affected by the decision. to reduce visas.

In his question, the parliamentarian pointed out that “the reception of some leaders of the separatist Front “Polisario” a few days ago at the headquarters of the French Parliament, without announcing an official agenda for this meeting, makes the latter have many connotations with clear political dimensions. and diplomatic.

For his part, Abdel Wahed Awlad Mouloud, a specialist in international relations, considered that receiving the leaders of the front in the French parliament “is a negative reaction to French diplomacy, especially since we are in the stage of stabilizing positions and getting out of the gray ”. situation; This is a legitimate right for Morocco”.

Awlad Mouloud recorded, in his statements to the electronic newspaper Hespress, that France with these behaviors was out of the ordinary, especially because countries from different continents left the gray area and recognized the Moroccan nature of the Sahara; Which can be said with him that it is the beginning of a real crisis between the two countries.

The same spokesman added: “It is true that the issue of visas was the point that spilled the cup, since France dealt with Morocco in reverse of its dealings with Algeria and Tunisia; But receiving Polisario leaders in Parliament is an irresponsible act at a time when we are waiting for the situation to be corrected, which only made things worse.”

The researcher specializing in international relations recorded that official diplomacy “must take a position, and openly declare that the French position is not responsible and does not represent a link with the diplomatic norms between the two parties, and at the level of parties and parallel diplomacy, they take measures and positions so that France becomes aware that damaging territorial integrity is a red line, and that any treatment of the issue must be answered firmly.
