The short film “Bethlehem 2001”, directed by the Palestinian director Ibrahim Handal, will participate in the activities of the second edition of the Marrakech Short Film Festival, organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication during the period from 23 to 30 September.
The festival aims, according to a statement from the organizers, to build bridges between the short film industry and Marrakech, and to value local talent by disseminating their short films in simultaneous competition with films by international directors.
The same date also seeks to create a platform to promote the short film production industry, as well as to value the legacy of abandoned cinemas in Morocco.
The film “Bethlehem 2001” had its world premiere within the activities of the “Locarno” International Film Festival, and also competed in the international competition of the “Clermont Ferrand” Short Film Festival in France, in addition to receiving a special mention from the jury in the “MEDfilm” festival and participated in the “Cine of Peace” festival.
The film also won a tour of the Arab world; It was screened at the Ajyal Film Festival, participated in the Alexandria Film Festival, and screened locally at the Palestine Film Days.
The film tells the story of a young Palestinian man who is lost between what he is now and his childhood filled with memories of the military invasion and siege of Bethlehem, and tries to understand how his parents were able to protect and help him during those difficult times, hoping This will help you adapt to the present time.
The film was written and directed by Ibrahim Handal, and co-stars Mohamed Maghribi, Youssef Abu Shkheidam, Hind Abu Shkheidam, Tariq Abu Salama and Karam Al-Salaymeh, and is distributed by MAD Solutions in the Arab world.
It should be noted that Ibrahim Handal is a Palestinian director and cinematographer from Bethlehem. He has a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Arts and Culture at Dar Al-Kalima University and has directed many experimental short films.
Ibrahim has also worked as a cinematographer on several short films, including “Ambiance” by director Wissam al-Jaafari, which won third prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, and worked on the photography and lighting team for many Palestinian feature films. . and is currently working on his first feature film.
