From inside a room in the Agdal district of the capital, Rabat, the National Center for Climate Risk Management of the National Agency for Water and Forests follows the evolution of fires throughout Morocco, and the purpose is to anticipate the danger and coordinate with the terrain. units to monitor the development of fires.
Hespress visited the agency, and was informed of the details of the work of different cells that differentiate between logistics, catering, operations monitoring, planning, media and risk analysis; All this facilitated by Moroccan engineers with the latest specialized technological technologies.
The media system is fundamental within the center, from which all fires in the national territory are registered and controlled, arriving at a document from the different regions that highlights the date of the start of the fire and the area it has occupied, as well as the extension of the presence of fire-fighting equipment in the appropriate places.
Through the information system, comprehensive national, regional or thematic reports on erupting fires can be prepared, and information can be technically updated without the need for continuous manual intervention.
The hazard analysis system also works to provide the center with data on the groups that have witnessed fires in the last ten years, tracks the fire pressure map accurately, and provides forecasts on temperature, humidity, wind directions, and water points near the fires.
This system can identify danger areas, and thus communicate with the field to prepare well, and leave the barracks before the outbreak of the fire; It also tangibly highlights the possibility of fire spread and the levels of danger (medium, high and very high).
Immediately after reviewing the data, the process of communication with the units in the regions is carried out, determining the coordinates of the fire and deciding the possibility of communicating with the armed forces to use aircraft or settle with the intervention forces in the field. .
Added to the two systems mentioned is the Logistics and Supply Unit, from which the location and movement of fire trucks is monitored, while direct communication with them is ensured, and sufficient data on the fire is obtained; As well as dispatching the closest assistance teams.
In the same context, the planning system allows collective coordination and reconnaissance of the situation of fires via satellite, and highlights their places that are not normally observed. Immediately after viewing, units are dispatched to the location of the fires, recording exactly what is happening in the field.
In addition to the units, the center operates with drones acquired this year, and works to take photos directly from the field, and explore the wild areas to see the fires; It also has a thermal camera that monitors burning points that don’t seem to be visible.
